DNC Launches Spanish-Language Ad in Battle for Hispanic Swing Voters

July 22, 2011 | ABC News, by Devin Dwyer

In the latest sign of the growing influence of Hispanic voters, the Democratic National Committee has launched its first TV ad of the 2012 campaign in Spanish.

The 30-second spot, which will air in seven Hispanic-heavy swing states and the District of Columbia, comes in direct response to two pro-Republican Spanish-language ad campaigns rolled out in many of the same media markets earlier this week.

The Democrats’ ad opens with a reference to attacks on President Obama by one ad, from American Crossroads, the independent group with ties to Karl Rove, then fires back at Republicans for threatening to “end the Medicare guarantee” while favoring “tax cuts for the rich.”

It touts Obama’s record on health care, student financial aid and tax cuts for the middle-class.

“The special interest-funded Crossroads is trying to hide the fact that the Republican Party would end Medicare as we know it to pay for tax cuts for the very rich. They are trying to hide the fact that Republicans are supporting a budget plan that would roll back our economic progress and place additional burdens on seniors and the middle class,” said DNC chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz in a statement about the ad.

“But the Administration’s record is clear. President Obama has been focused from day one on strengthening economic security for working and middle class families. That’s why he extended health insurance to millions of children, expanded financial aid for our youth and cut taxes for the middle class.”

The DNC says the ad will air in Reno and Las Vegas, Nevada; Tampa, Orlando and Miami, Florida; Denver, Colorado; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Washington, D.C. A spokeswoman did not immediately confirm the size of the buy or how long it would run.
