Baruch College Joins Forces With The Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation To Exhibit Contemporary Cuban Art

Opening reception for Cosas Ocultas, featuring the work of Alberto Casado and Rocío García

April 28th 6- 8 p.m. Sidney Mishkin Gallery

New York, NY, April 25, 2011 –Baruch College partners with the Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation to present Cosas Ocultas (Hidden Realities) at the Sidney Mishkin Gallery from April 29th to June 1st. The exhibition is part of the citywide showcase of Cuban art and culture, ¡Sí Cuba!

Cosas Ocultas features the work of Cuban artists Rocío García and Alberto Casado. This bold exhibition is co-curated by Corina Matamoros Tuma, Contemporary Curator, National Arts Museum in Havana, Cuba and Rachel Weingeist, Curator, the Shelley and Donald Rubin Private Collection.

In 1991, the collapse of the Soviet Union brought about economic decline in Cuba. This era, known as the “Special Period,” inspired a new wave of Cuban art that explored issues rarely discussed or depicted before then —such as homosexuality, racism, migration, and poverty. The two artists featured in Cosas Ocultas, Alberto Casado and Rocío García, both contemporaries of this movement, each offer a unique perspective on Cuban society.

A panel discussion on contemporary Cuban art will take place on Friday, May 6th with Rocío García and Corina Matamoros Tuma. Baruch College Professor Katrin Hansing will moderate. The panel will take place in The Oak Room at Baruch College, 137 East 22nd Street 137 East 22nd Street.
